The "cherished item" poems

These poems were written in mid-May.  The first stanza is a "you can take away" verse.  The second is "I can do without."  The third is "I can live without."

You can take away my bed,
You can take away my preacher,
But PLEASE don’t take away
My 3rd grade teacher.

I can do without my house,
I can do without reach,
But I can’t do without
My really great teacher.

I can live without water,
I can live without leech,
But I can’t live without
My really nice teacher.

But I can’t live without
My playful Lucy Lu!

Would you, could you: Third grade writers innovate on a Dr. Seuss classic

One of the ways young writers learn is by innovating on a pattern -- especially one they really like.  Recently, our writers did their own version of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham.  Read this and enjoy, but if you'd like, come by and look at the picture book version in class, one they illustrated themselves.  The book really brings the text to life, and, in many cases adds visual jokes to the book that you would be able to "get" by just reading the text below.

Do you like beans and steak?

If you try them you will see

Third graders writers craft "roses are red" poems for Valentine's Day

We're studying and writing poetry in writer's workshop, and our young poets wrote "roses are red" poems to begin the unit.  While all could start with "roses are red," their only restriction was that the second line could not be "violets are blue."  The result were poems in an A/B/C/B pattern, where the second and fourth line rhymed.  Enjoy their great senses of humor and their first attempts at rhyming poetry!

Roses are red.
My socks are smelly.
Yours are too
And my last name is Kelley.

Kayla

Roses are red.
Hearts are green.
Ms. Jacobs is cool.
But me, I am mean.

Roy
(He really isn’t. ~Ms. Jacobs)

Roses are red.
Dandelions are yellow.
Jack is my friend
Because he is a good fellow.

Noah

Roses are red.
Leaves are green.
Right now it’s winter.
Can’t wait ‘til spring.

Mandi

Roses are red.
Matthew is funny.
I really don’t like him.
But he looks like a bunny.

Jack

Roses are red.
Dogs are cute.
And tails are too.
Do you toot?

Mariah

Roses are red.
Tulips are yellow.
Strawberries are good
Just like a cello.

Lexi

Roses are red.
Roses are black.
I like Ms. Jacobs
And she likes me back.

Ally

Roses are red.
Hearts are pink.
I love you
And you stink.

Jaycee

Roses are red.
Puppies are brown.
And they are cute
And they go to town.

Cayti

Roses are red.
My shirts are slush.
This soup is  yuck.
But I like this mush.

Cade

Roses are red.
Stars are yellow.
Teachers are nice
And you are too.

Blake

Roses are red.
My dog is white.
Clean my room?
I just might.

Shelby

Roses are red.
Water bottles are black.
I like cheese
But it makes me yak.

Sydney

Roses are red.
The sun is yellow.
When I look at it
I turn mellow.

Jaden

Roses are red.
Lexi’s shirt is pink.
I don’t like fairies.
Especially Tink.

Tori

Roses are red.
Flowers are coo coo.
Ms. Jacobs is sweet.
And guess you are too.

Kobe

Roses are red.
Love is too.
You are a puppy
And I love you.

Haley

Roses are red.
Daisies are yellow.
Cade needs to go to the restroom.
But I won’t let him in, fellow.

Dallas

Roses are red.
They don’t bring me down.
Dogs are brown.
They give no frown.

Tabitha
